Charlie Weis rips Tony Romo, CBS for Super Bowl 2024 broadcast

Charlie Weis would rather puke than listen to Jim Nantz and Tony Romo call a Super Bowl.

“I try to watch the game and not let the announcers ruin the game for me,” Weis said on “Airing It Out” on Sirius XM, alongside Giants radio announcer Bob Papa. “It’s not like I can listen to anybody like (Papa) doing the game, there are some announcers I really enjoy listening to. But then there’s announcers where if I have to listen, I’d rather go to the bathroom and throw up.

“[Sunday,] that was one of the times where I preferred not to listen to the announcers and watch the game.”

Weis, the former Super Bowl-winning Patriots assistant and failed college head coach, seemed to particularly have issues with Romo, which is not unusual.

Romo has been particularly criticized for interjecting his analysis moments after the Chiefs’ title-clinching touchdown pass from Patrick Mahomes to former Jet disappointment Mecole Hardman.

Announcers usually let the moment breathe after a title is won, and that’s what play-by-play announcer Jim Nantz seemed ready to do after proclaiming: “It’s there! Hardman! Jackpot! Kansas City!”

Romo let three seconds pass before analyzing the play.

“This was the Andy Reid special, we talked about he was saving all day. He is going to fake a motion to go across. That moment he turns and goes back — Hardman, who they didn’t have, right? And they go get Hardman and bring him back,” Romo said as the Chiefs celebrated their third Super Bowl win in five years. “The game-winning drive of Mahomes’ career, he has been waiting for. He’s won Super Bowls, but he’s never had it in overtime. He is the best, he is the standard, Michael Jordan. Wins it again.”

Weis joined that chorus of fans who think Romo ruined the moment.

“I wasn’t listening to those guys because they really turned me off, I have to tell you. They do, they turn me off,” said Weis, who is an analyst for SiriusXM.

“I listen to the end of the game and listened to Tony Romo ruin the moment. Just shut up and let us savor the moment. Just be quiet. Nantz had already said, ‘Jackpot.’ That should have been the end of the (conversation).

“I don’t need to hear your analysis of what just happened. I just watched it. I want to watch the moment and enjoy the moment as a sports fan. Will you please, please just let us enjoy the moment.

“It’s different than (Chiefs radio announcer) Mitch (Holthus) on radio having to describe the moment because you’re not seeing it. We’re watching it. Let us watch it.”

With Romo already being asked by his boss to tone it down, the negative reaction to his Super Bowl performance is certainly a sports media storyline of interest.
